Adventure Mamas Initiative is a non-profit organization that is redefining motherhood. We are enhancing women’s health by facilitating adventure, building community, and providing educational and inspirational resources to our diverse community.
AMI is built off the premise that there is immense healing, growth, and transformation that takes place when we pursue challenge and adventure. We believe that spending time in wild places is more than a selfish luxury, it should be available to all. That is why we offer programs and resources to diverse women from diverse backgrounds, situations, and cultures including teen moms, mamas of children who have a disability, refugees and immigrants, survivors of domestic abuse, and more.
We are advocates for women’s post-partum wellness and are committed to empowering mothers to be pro-active in caring for their health. For the outdoor woman, turned outdoor mama, we believe that adventure is a vital component of self-care.
We want to help moms recognize that pursuing personal passion is an important part of a balanced life. When you take care of yourself, you are better able to fulfill all of your other roles.
We’re confronting the barriers that hinder some women from adventuring such as mommy-guilt, societal pressures, and fear and then replacing them with stoke, opportunity, education, and community.
The transition into parenthood is a huge life shift, inevitably and undeniably. For the new mother though, the experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum recovery can be mind-blowing. There are physical, emotional, and chemical changes that take place simultaneously. It’s a very vulnerable time and our society doesn’t always depict the experience honestly.
It’s not a coincidence that many outdoor-women seem more hesitant to start a family. In some ways, it feels like you have to choose between adventure and family. Maybe it’s mommy-guilt or societal expectations or time-constraints… regardless, the result is women quietly suffer through pervasive post-partum struggles including anxiety, depression, resentment, loneliness, complacency, and more.
Motherhood doesn’t have to fit into a prescribed box; women need to feel empowered to live an intentional life that is fulfilling, balanced, and joyful. The women in our community especially need to know that while adventure does look different after kids… different time constraints, emotional constraints, physical constraints, it’s still entirely possible. You can have the camaraderie, challenge, and efficacy that adventure brings and still balance the beautiful demands of motherhood.
We strive to be authentic in all aspects of what we do, from the writing we produce and feature to our interactions with the AM community to the photos we display on our social media and website.
Fostering a strong sense of connection, collaboration, and community is a huge component of what we seek to accomplish. When we have a support system in place that uplifts, embraces, and encourages us, we all thrive.
There is something extraordinarily enticing about pushing past your perceived limits and accomplishing something you thought was beyond you. Adventure gives us the opportunity to redefine what we believe we’re capable of– that’s a beautiful thing.
Travel, exploration, mountain sports… these are more than a selfish luxury, they’re an important part of our health and well-being.
We believe that a vital part of balanced living is fulfilling all of your roles while also remembering to care for your own needs.
Breastfeeding mishaps, broken sporks, diaper disasters, and coffee spilled on maps… Maintaining a sense of humor makes all situations more bearable. Fact.
What started off as a way for two new moms to meet local, like-minded women, turned into something much more powerful. As we began connecting with others, we realized a very real need for a larger, encompassing community that validates and encourages adventure, camaraderie, and challenge for mothers. This is the Adventure Mamas Initiative and together we are all redefining motherhood.
Writer, experiential educator, maternal health advocate, community builder, wife, and mama are some of the roles I assume. Adventure has saturated both my professional and personal life and I firmly believe in the growth, healing, and transformation that occurs when you’re immersed in wild places. Alpine settings inspire me like nothing else so you can often find me in the mountains rock climbing, bike touring, backpacking, and snowboarding. Integrating a little one into this lifestyle has been amazing with an often hilarious learning curve. Regardless though, I hope to model for him a passionate, adventurous, and intentional life.
I’m living in the midwest…but don’t let that fool you. I’m a mountain-loving mama and adventurer. By day, I’m a digital art director and on nights and weekends I do my best to make sure I’m waking up in a tent. Backpacking, climbing, and paddling are my first choice adventures for self-care and resetting my soul. The type two fun I’ve put myself through in the outdoors has taught me what I’m capable of in this life. My mission is to teach my children the power of personal challenges in the wild and remind them we can bring mountain culture to the midwest—even with a 9-5 gig.
